In the spooky spirit of the season, let's talk about the mysterious realms of magic, witchcraft, and necromancy. Did the ancient Greeks believe in magic? Where did the idea of magic come from? What practices were common, and which acts stood outside the bounds of acceptable behavior?
In this presentation I'll share some modern thoughts and theories about magic in the ancient Greek world, along with a few images and quotes from surviving texts. I'll also introduce some of the key mythological figures associated with magic and witchcraft.
Immediately following the talk there will be a short break, then those who wish to are welcome to stay for Hekate's Deipnon: a Dark Moon Offering to Hekate at 6:30pm.
