On the last day of his life, Socrates pursued, along with his friends and visitors, an inquiry into the destiny of the soul. This dialogue is one of Plato’s literary masterpieces, exploring and illustrating the limits of reason while making a case for the embodiment of hope.

Recommended reading: this is one you'll want to read in full. But if you're pressed for time, the central portion for our purposes is the Myth of the Afterlife (107c-115a).
