Plotinus (c. 204/5 – 270 CE), a Hellenistic philosopher who lived in Egypt in the time of the Roman Empire, taught a doctrine that brought an enduring new cohesion to the Platonic tradition, later identified as “Neoplatonism.” His concept of the three principles of the One, the Mind, and the Soul has been foundational in mystical and esoteric theory ever since. In this class we will provide an overview of his work, emphasizing those aspects that have fed into the mystery traditions of the West, and to some extent those of the East, also.
